When I went to internet only, I had a 2 port splitter in place for TV and Cable Modem, -3.5db. I took the splitter out in the summer and did a straight run through the grounding block. My power levels were up around +9 some mornings. I knew as it got colder my levels would increase. I put the splitter back into the line and terminated the unused port. Dropped me down to +6 in the mornings. Fast forward to now, its colder than a witches teet outside, 23F. Yes I'm a true Texan and not a fan of the cold.
Well my levels are starting to push the +9 level with the splitter, +12db if it were a straight drop. I'm know I won't get anywhere complaining to Charter about my levels running too hot unless I'm having major issues. I asked a local tech when I put the splitter back in my line if I could get an attenuator from him. I was informed that only lead tech's carry them. I know, from that tech, that the amps in my area are running hot as many people have 3+ port splitters on their homes. I'm 350 main line cable foot from my amp and I'm on the 3rd tap with 70ft drop line from the pole and 30ft from the splitter to the modem.
My question is, should I use a coax attenuator, -6db in summer and -12db in winter? Or an unbalanced splitter(-3.5 summer/7 winter/7 terminated) to bring my levels back down to within spec?
